Olympic gold medalist and figure skating champion Nathan Chen delivers a powerful and inspirational debut picture book about facing your fears and finding the joy in sports, no matter the outcome.
Wei has loved ice skating ever since his first visit to the rink. He loves gliding across the ice, taking flight on jumps, and moving with the music—there’s nothing else like it! Now Wei’s first big competition is coming up. He’s very excited and he’s been training hard. But what if he doesn’t win? The nearer the big day gets, the more anxious Wei feels, and the more mistakes he begins to make on the ice. With help from Mom, can Wei find a way to handle his nerves? And what would it feel like to skate without the pressure of winning?
About the Author
On February 10, 2022, Nathan Chen redefined men’s figure skating, winning the Olympic gold medal and cementing his position as Quad King, a name bestowed upon him after the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships when Chen became the first man in figure skating history to land five quadruple jumps in a single performance. Born in Salt Lake City, Chen began skating at age three. After an Olympic debut in 2018 that earned him fifth place, Chen went on to win three World Championships, six Grand Prix events, two Grand Prix Finals, and six more U.S. titles. When Chen returned to the Olympics in 2022, he secured an Olympic title, which established him as the first Asian American male skater to do so. When asked who he would dedicate his gold medal to, Chen said, “My mother. No one deserves it more.”Lorraine Nam is an illustrator based in Brooklyn, NY.
