In the spirit of Where the Wild Things Are, this whimsical and heartfelt picture book follows a young girl who leaves to explore an underwater world with a new friend, only to discover there is someone back home she can’t forget: her mother.

This little girl has a secret. But when she tells her mom about her discovery, her mom sets it aside. Angry and confused, she runs away with her new friend to the vast depths of the ocean, where she encounters fanciful underwater scenes with mermaids, giant whales, and hundreds of colorful fish. But despite the wonders she sees in the ocean, she learns that coming home can be just as fulfilling as the adventure itself.

Filled with unforgettable illustrations, author-illustrator Peter Cheong crafts an imaginative tale with a touching ode to the loving places and people we can always return to.

About the Author

Peter is the illustrator of I’m a Hero Too, Nothing Alike, and the Pow Pow Pig series in Australia. His author-illustrator debut, Every Night at Midnight (S&S/Atheneum) publishes in August 2023 and Where We Can Hear the Giants Sing (Holt) will be released in Fall 2024. Peter lives in Perth (Whadjuk Region), Western Australia, with his very understanding wife and less understanding cat (and even less understanding baby).
